Ballarat Fund Raiser for St Jude's School, Arusha, Tanzania

My sister - Glenda Pym - looks after media relations at St Jude's School in Arusha, Tanzania in East Africa. The school was started 10 years ago by a young Australia teacher, Gemma Sissia, who had been concerned at the plight of the poor children in Arusha. The school receives no government funding and relies on donations - mainly from Australians, but from other nations as well. Donations may be in the form of sponsoring a child or a teacher, or by making a one- off contribution to their food, books, uniforms, etc. or the supply of equipment and other necessities needed to successfully run a school. Gemma's story has been featured on Australian Story on ABC TV.

Kim Saville, the school's Deputy Director is currently touring Australia to promote the school and gain much-needed further support. She will be visiting Ballarat on Wednesday 7 March and will attend a fund-raising morning tea at the Ballarat Yacht Club at 9.30am. Full details are below.

Kim will talk about how access to a quality education is out of reach for most Tanzanian children and the reality of life without an education in East Africa. The School of St Jude is one of a kind, What started 10 years ago with one teacher and three students is now a school with 1600 students, 150 teachers, 250 auxiliary staff, 3 campuses and a fleet of over 20 school buses. In addition Kim will discuss the challenges she has faced and the rewards she finds in her daily routine at St Jude's.     Here is the school's website - http://www.schoolofstjude.org/

Hope to see some of my Ballarat friends there on Wednesday
